The documents of the fonds concern municipalities within the District Notary Office in Kostolný Sek and deal with all aspects of their social development. Due to the continuous presence of the Jewish population in the municipalities of the district Judaica can be expected in several types of the documents. These are, in particular, the minutes of the meetings of the local councils from 1891-1936. However, these documents have been preserved from different periods in individual municipalities: in Kostolný Sek from 1891-1931, in Nitrianský Hádok from 1903-1932 and in Mlynský Sek from 1903-1936. The register books, especially the registers of domicile certificates, preserved in Kostolný Sek from the period of 1930-1940 and in Mlynský Sek from 1921, 1930-1940, are also important.
The presidium documents have been preserved in the fonds from 1924-1938. Among them more important ones are the documents relating to the elections to the local council from 1923-1931. The administrative documents have been preserved from 1874-1944. In particular it is possible to make use of the list of traders from 1898, individual extracts from the minutes, or the minutes of meetings of local councils from the 19th century up to 1914, but especially documents marked as trade-related matters from the 1920s.
- Archival history:
- A large part of the fonds was destroyed during the war in 1945, but also due to inappropriate placement and handling. In 1957, it was taken over by the District Archives in Šurany where an appraisal was carried out in the same year. In 1964, the fonds was completely inventoried. In 1966, it was taken over by the District Archives in Nové Zámky, the predecessor of the institution where the fonds is stored now.
- Administrative/biographical history:
- Notary offices evolved from the position of the notary who was originally a non-public contractual person. From the beginning of the 1870s, the position of the local, or district notary was defined by the law. The notaries were regular members of the local councils with the right to vote, keeping all the written agenda for them as self-governing officials. The oldest preserved documents of the fonds are from 1877, but the notary office had been active even before that year. The authority of the Office covered the municipalities of Kostolný Sek and Nitranský Hrádok (now parts of the municipality of Šurany) and Mlynský Sek (now a part of the municipality of Lipová). In 1920, the notary became a civil servant with the right to veto the resolutions of the local council. The Notary Office in Kostolný Sek was active even after the annexation by Hungary after the 1st Vienna Arbitration in November 1938, but ceased to exist in 1945. The existence of notary offices was officially ended by the Regulation of the Slovak National Council of 7 April 1945.
