In general, the documents of the fonds can be used for examining land registry matters, land titles and the situation of the municipalities of the Galanta District. The documents also enable genealogy research and business affairs research. The fonds contains a large number of documents concerning the Jewish population included in several subject groups.
The first group includes contracts (Z) divided into several subgroups. One of the largest group contains family law agreements (Z 1). The most numerous are marriage contracts (Z 1.1) from 1875-1891, containing an exceptionally high number of Judaica which concern local inhabitants (e.g. M. Rieger from Sereď, Leopold Braun from Pusté Úľany and Helena Reiszová) as well as persons from more distant regions (e.g. Jakub Lõwy from Sibiu and Natalia Steiner from Galanta). Judaica can also be found in dowry contracts (Z 1.2) from 1880-1890, e.g. the securing of Bernard Resin's wife's dowry by a land in Pusté Úľany. A smaller number of Judaica concern contracts for other matrimonial matters (Z 1.5) from 1880 and 1886 (Z 1.5), e.g. the securing of the welfare of J. Kammer's widow, Netti Reiszová by granting her right to use a real estate in Mostová. There is also one divorce agreement (Z 1.6) dating back to 1881 in the fonds which concerns fees and the payment of the dowry by Š. Deutsch from Trstíce to his wife Léni and her father I. Reisz with a detailed list of real estates.
A separate subgroup contains inheritance contracts (Z 2) from 1886-1891. These include, for example, a statement by Hana Spitzerová née Adlerová from Nové Zámky regarding her waiver of inheritance rights in favour of her siblings.
Several types of contracts can be found in the subgroup of Substantive Law (Z3). Extremely numerous are sale contracts (Z 3.1) from 1875-1891 which include plenty of contracts concluded by Jewish owners, e.g. Izidor Wollner from Vienna, Simon Deuts from Trstec, or Móric Steiner from Kajal. Another type of documents is donation contracts (Z 3.2) dating from 1876-1890 in which Judaica also occur, concerning, for example, Hermann Stern from Galanta and Leopold Hecht from Veľký Šúr as the donors of a real estate in Dolná Streda to V. Guttmann from Dolná Streda. The donation contracts (Z 3.3) from 1881, 1884 and 1887 are less numerous, but they also contain information on Jews, e.g. on Mór Lőwenstein who exchanged his land in Sládkovičovo. Judaica can also be found in contracts for the transfer of property rights (Z 3.5) from 1879-1891. They include, for example, the transfer of property rights of Martin Breuer from Trstice to his daughter Netti Breuerová. A smaller group consists of delivery contracts (Z 3.6) dating from 1876- 1882, among which one can find a delivery contract made by I. Laufer and his wife P. Wolfová from Veľké Úľany to settle her dowry. A smaller group with numerous Judaica includes contracts for the right of use, or lease agreements (Z 3.7) from 1879-1889, such as renting a real estate by M. Lőwensohn or renting the pub license in Pusté Úľany by B. Reiszner to I. Leuchter.
There is a special subject group, labeled Other Contracts (Z 4) among the contracts. Thematically important are promissory notes and debts (Z 1.4) from 1880-1889 which include, for example, several promissory notes of Fanni Steinerová from Galanta and others. From 1881, there is only one business contract (Z 3.4) in the fonds, which was made by Ignác Ehrenwald, a wood merchant from Sereď.
Another numerous subject group, which is not further divided, is labeled Testaments (T) from 1876-1891, among which one can find, for example, the testaments of J. Adler from Košúty or K. Müllerová, a widow of Abraham Messinger, from Košúty.
A larger subject group consists of testimonies (S), which are divided into six subgroups. All of them contain references to Jews. From 1886-1890, there are verifications of signatures (S 1, e.g. Netti Kalischová, née Kohnová, from Galanta), powers of attorney (S 2, e.g. Leni Sternová from Galanta) and financial statements (S 3, e.g. H. Lichtner from Galanta). Other subgroups include records of accepting and sending letters (S 4) from 1880-1890 (e.g. Fani Steinerová) and notices, filings and records (S 5) from 1875-1890 (e.g. R. Steiner from Galanta).
A small special subject group is Deposits (D) from 1880-1890. It also includes useful information, e.g. a record of the deposit of Adolf Adler from Galanta for the purchase of goods.
- Archival history:
- The fonds was separated, along with other collections concerning public notaries, from the archival fonds of the District Court in Galanta. In 1960, the fonds was taken over by the predecessor of the institution where it is now. This is one of the largest archive collections concerning the public notaries of Galanta. It is currently classified as fully inventoried.
- Administrative/biographical history:
- Julius Petrovits was probably the first public notary in Galanta appointed pursuant to the Act of 1874. He started work in 1875 and ended it in 1891 when a new public notary was appointed as his successor. The public notary was primarily responsible for issuing public documents, testaments, and testimonies. He took documents in custody and dealt with inheritance, and later also guardianship matters, among other things. The territorial jurisdiction of the notary included the territory of the district court where it was seated.
