The documents of the fonds concern the town of Komárno, dealing with all aspects of social development. Given the permanent existence of a large Jewish community on the territory of the town in 1848-1922, Judaica are presumed to be found in the following documents which are sorted in several subject groups:
The subject group labeled “The municipal board and the council” includes protocols and minutes of the municipal board from 1849-1905, the mayor's minutes from 1853-1858, regulations from 1848-1899, six volumes of successive protocols of the municipal board from 1861-1922, with which five volumes of complete indexes from 1864-1923 can be used. This type of documents also includes two volumes of minutes of the wider municipal board from 1850-1917.
The file labeled “Inhabitants of the town” is among the most important subject groups. Of particular importance are the documents from the censuses carried out in 1850 and 1869. This subject group also includes register records from 1867-1920, documents relating to associations dating from 1893-1918, and two volumes of minutes of the public administration committees from 1876-1915.
The usability of the subject group labeled “Legal and judicial affairs” is significantly limited by the unavailability of the documents. Thematically important documents are to be found in the land register group where it is possible to research the ownership situations in the town of Komárno and their changes. This information can be found in the registry finding aids and the records associated with the land registers from 1861-1871. However, the 1850-1874 land registers themselves are most relevant. Important are also entries in the land registry which have been preserved from 1877, 1882, 1884, 1898 and 1900 as well as registry finding aids to the land books from 1907-1919 and the cadastral land book from 1886-1899. This subject group also includes smaller files such as a list of landowners on Alžběta Island from 1884-1923, fragments of judicial cadastral documents from 1879-1890, write-offs of bonds from 1814-1877, and a record of owners from 1870. The content of the judicial agenda itself can be studied in the registry finding aids and in the books relating to court matters from the period of 1848-1871. This subject group also includes property disputes from 1898-1914 and documents on seizures of property from 1898-1912.
From the documents that are part of the subject group labeled “Military Affairs” it is possible to use especially lists of draftees from 1861-1912.
In the subject group labeled “Town Hospital” researchers may especially use the register of patients from 1900-1907. Various types of documents are to be found in the subject group labeled “Charity Affairs of the Town”. These include lists of impoverished persons needing help from 1903-1920, and various documents, such as the register of orphans from 1883, the register of illegitimate newborns from 1885, the list of poor persons from 1919, the list of war orphans from 1915, and the orphan agenda from 1829-1856.
The fonds also includes electoral registers and files, documents from 1848-1849, and various undated register matters and testaments.
- Archival history:
- The archive of the town of Komárno was administered by a special official until 1938, and this practice continued until the end of the war, even when Komárno was annexed by Hungary as a result of the 1st Vienna Arbitration. As a result of events during the war, the arrangement of the fonds was disrupted and the fonds itself suffered damage. In 1945-1955, the fonds was administered by the Local Administration Commission in Komárno. In 1955, the fonds was taken over by the District Archives in Komárno, the predecessor of the institution in which it is held. There, the fonds was only partially arranged and catalogued, or inventoried. The fonds was mainly increased by taking over its smaller parts in 1961 and 1989. The research usability of the fonds is quite limited due to its unavailability and disorder of its main part, especially the files. In this extensive fonds it is currently possible to use only official books and registry finding aids.
- Administrative/biographical history:
- The earliest record concerning the town of Komárno dates back to 1075. In 1265, Komárno received town privileges which were confirmed in 1331, but it continued to be a small town. Its legal status changed on 16 March 1745, when it was promoted to a free royal town. Its significance increased after 1886, when it was ranked among the so-called county municipalities with self-government at county level. The town municipality was headed by the principal county head and the highest legislative authority was the municipality board. The chief executive authority was the town board headed by the mayor. Komárno had this position with minor changes until 1922 when it was ranked among large municipalities. In 1919, 16,522 people lived in the town, 2,148 of them being of Jewish religion.
- System of arrangement:
- The fonds consists of documents from the period of 1277-1844, official books from 1527-1900 and books from 1901-1922 (1923), registry finding aids from 1853-1922 (1923), and files from 1560-1922. The usable part of the fonds is divided into seven subject groups: I. Municipal board and council, II. Inhabitants of the city, III. Legal and judicial matters, IV. Town office head, V. Military affairs, VI. Town hospital, VII. Charity affairs of the town.
