- Scope and content:
- The documents of the fonds are of particular importance for the history of the municipalities of the region. The fonds includes circulars of superior authorities concerning politics, public administration, culture, technology, and agriculture. An important source is the minutes of meetings of municipal councils which provide a comprehensive idea of the situation in the municipalities. They deal with the municipal administration and management of schools, roads, institutes, etc. It is likely that they contain references to the Jewish community. It is also likely that relevant information can be found in population registers, such as a report of men aged 19 to 45 living in the district of the Notary Office in 1935. From 1935, there is a file concerning the registration of two Polish nationals - Abraham Adolf and Chaim Goldstein - with their personal data. From the same year, there is a file concerning the salary of the rabbi from Ždaňa together with a municipal testimony. The notary was also responsible for keeping state registers of births, deaths, and marriages, regardless of religion.
- Archival history:
- The documents of the District Notary Office in Rozhanovce were found during an archival inspection of the registry of the Local National Committee in Rozhanovce carried out in 1963 by employees of the Archives Department of the Regional Administration of the Ministry of Interior in Košice.
- Administrative/biographical history:
- The District Notary Office in Rozhanovce also administered other municipalities, namely Ploské, Vyšný Olčvár, Vajkoce, and Královce. The Office is certain to have existed since 1895, as the register books come from that year. It is assumed that it could have existed even before that year. It was headed by the district notary who had primary and delegated authorities. Within the primary authority he dealt, in writing, with the general agenda. The delegated authority concerned the agenda dealt with on behalf of the District Office, and partly the Tax Office. After the establishment of the Czechoslovak Republic, the notary became a civil servant appointed by the Minister of Interior, instead of being a municipal servant. He was no longer a member of the self-governing bodies of municipalities, becoming independent of them. Since 1939, there existed a Notary Office in Rozhanovce.
