- Scope and content:
- The fonds provides information on the development of municipal schools, the history of local church parishes and municipal societies, and statistical data. From the files, especially the ministerial circulars and regulations, it is possible to get an idea of the application of individual laws in the practical life of the municipalities. The fonds includes the minutes of municipal councils of individual municipalities. It is likely that they also contain information about the Jewish population. The notary's files contain the register of foreign passports, the register of convicted persons, and the register of women who worked as wet nurses and foster mothers. In the files mentioned by the registry finding aid there is a record from 1897 concerning an unpaid debt of Mor Groszman from Ždaňa to the rabbi. From the same year, there is a record of the council in Ždaňa regarding the collection of the arrears for the local rabbi. From 1898, there is a notice in the aid referring to an invitation to send information on immigrant poor Jews from Poland to the border counties. From 1899, there is a decision concerning an application of the Jewish religious community in Ždaňa for a building permit, and from 1900, instructions for giving permissions to settle to poor Jews coming from Romania. Another file mentioned by the aid is from 1938 dealing with the salary for Nathan Jungreis, the principal rabbi in Ždaňa. The notary was also responsible for keeping state registers. Therefore the fonds includes state registers of births, deaths and marriages regardless of religion.
- Archival history:
- The documents of the District Notary Office in Čana were found during an inspection of the registry of the National Committee in Čaňa carried out in September of 1955 by the employees of the Archives Department of the Regional Branch of the Ministry of Interior in Košice. The documents were found in the loft of the building. The first appraisal was carried out in 1957, when 54 parcels from 1901-1938 were separated and shredded. The fonds was taken over by the former District Archives in Košice in 1958. Due to the frequent moving of the Archives, the original arrangement of the fonds was disturbed. The fonds was processed and made available in 2007.
- Administrative/biographical history:
- The District Notary Office in Čaňa also administered other municipalities, namely Gyňov, Trstené pri Hornáde, Skároš, and Ždaňa. The Office had certainly existed since 1893 because the earliest archival document is from that year. It is assumed that it could have existed even earlier. The above-mentioned municipalities were gradually affiliated. Since 1908, it had been one of the largest notary offices. It was headed by the district notary who had the primary and delegated authorities. Within the primary authority he dealt, in writing, with tasks related to the general agenda. Within the delegated authority, he dealt with the agenda on behalf of the District Office and partly of the Tax Office. After the establishment of the Czechoslovak Republic, the notary became a civil servant appointed by the Minister of Interior instead of being a municipal servant. He was no longer a member of the self-governing bodies of municipalities, being independent of them. Since November of 1938, the Notary Office in Čaňa had been part of Hungary due to the Vienna Arbitration.
