- The fonds contains various documents concerning schools in the given territory. Information on Jewish schools and pupils is to be found in several files according to the finding aid. In the documents of the Principal (later Superior) Grammar School in Uzhhorod from 1777-1785, one can find a file concerning the construction of the Jewish Elementary School in Uzhhorod and a file from the school year of 1812/1813 concerning confiscation of Hebrew books. From 1824, there are the conditions for the admission of Jewish pupils to grammar schools. A file on the reluctance of the rabbi to issue a school report about religion classes of Jewish pupils has been preserved from the school year of 1835/1836. From the school year of 1862/1863, the finding aid mentions reports on Jewish elementary schools of the school district, and from the following school year, there are summary reports on the conditions of the Jewish elementary schools in the Eger Archdiocese and the Košice, Szatmár, Spiš and Vác Dioceses. A report on the Jewish Principal Elementary School in Prešov has been preserved from the school year of 1864/1865 and a list of state Jewish elementary schools from 1865/1866. The inventory also mentions the annual report of the Jewish Model Elementary School in Sátoraljaújhely (Hungary) from 1867/1868. From 1869, there is a file on the founding of the Jewish Principal Elementary School in Košice, and from 1890, a protest from the Szatmár bishop against religion classes of Protestant and Jewish pupils in the building of the Grammar School. Separate fonds of the abolished schools have also been preserved in the fonds. These schools handed over their documents to the Directorate registry before their abolishment. This was also the case of the Jewish Model Elementary School in Sátoraljaújhely (Hungary) which operated in 1865-1871/1872. The fonds also includes a filing protocol from the period of the school's existence, files on pupils, finances, teachers, the school buildings, textbooks, and annual reports (see also above).
- Archival history:
- The documents of the fonds arrived in the Archives in four parts. The largest part was transferred there in 1957 and 1958 from the Premonstratensian monastery in Jasov where the documents were stored due to lack of space in the building of the Directorate. A smaller part was handed over to the Archives in 1962 by the East Slovak Museum in Košice, where the documents were part of the estate of the headmaster of the Principal Premonstratensian Grammar School in Košice. The last part came to the Archives in 1964 from the Jasov monastery. A temporary inventory was made in 1963, and the definitive one in 1978.
- Administrative/biographical history:
- The Main Directorate of the School District in Košice was established in the school year of 1776/1777 when the territory of Hungary was divided into eight districts. It supervised all elementary, secondary and higher schools within its jurisdiction. It was headed by the Royal Main School Director. The Directorate was subordinated to the Royal Vice-Governor's Council. The Council was supposed to be given reports by the Director about his inspections of the schools which he was to perform at least once every two years. Later on, he also had an obligation to supervise teaching, the implementation of regulations and orders, and the conducting of school leaving examinations. The following counties belonged to the school district: Abov, Gemer, Spiš, Turňa, Zemplín and the province of XVI Spiš towns. During the centralisation efforts in the 18th century, the number of the school districts was reduced to four. The counties of Berež, Boršod, and Heveš, the external entity of Solnok, the territories of Jazygov and Malé Kumánsko, and the county of Uzhhorod were added to the district of Košice. With the incorporation of the counties and the privileged areas into the district, various changes were also made in connection with the extending or narrowing of the territory of the school districts. The Directorate was abolished in the period of 1849-1862. The Directorate ceased to operate in Košice in the school year of 1918/1919.
