- Scope and content:
- The documents of the fonds are of particular importance for the history of the municipalities of the region. An important source is the minutes of meetings of the municipal councils which provide a complex idea of the events in the municipalities. They concern the municipal administration and the management of schools, roads, institutes, etc. The minutes are certain to contain information on the Jewish community which was quite large in the town of Velké Kapušany. The accounting material allows one to get an idea of the financial management of the municipalities. There are files from 1939 concerning a rejection of the proposal to establish classes for Jewish children and to establish a temporary successive class for them. The notary was also responsible for keeping state registers so the fonds includes registers of births, deaths and marriages regardless of religion.
- Archival history:
- After the Notary Office ceased to exist, the documents of the fonds were deposited in the registries of the notary offices, and later in the premises of the National Committee from where they were taken to the Archives. The fonds has not been fully preserved due to the improper handling and wars. The fonds was processed in 1988, when an appraisal was carried out, too.
- Administrative/biographical history:
- The District Notary Office in Velké Kapušany included several municipalities. The documents of the fonds have been preserved since 1895. The Office was headed by the district notary who had both his own and delegated authorities. His own authority included dealing, in writing, with tasks related to the municipal agenda. His delegated authority covered the agenda which was carried out on behalf of the District Office, and partly of the Tax Office. In Hungary, the notary was an elected official of the municipal council, and in Czechoslovakia he was a civil servant with the right to veto resolutions of the municipal council. After the establishment of the Czechoslovak Republic, he became a civil servant appointed by the Minister of the Interior instead of being a municipal official. He was no longer a member of the municipal self-governing body, being independent of it. The municipalities belonging to the district changed, with the central ones being Klačany, Močiar, Ňarád, Velké Kapušany, Veškovce, later also Budkovce, Čičarovce and Čierne Pole. The District Notary Office existed until 1945.
