- Scope and content:
- The documents of the fonds are of particular importance for the history of the municipalities and the region. The fonds includes circulars of the superior authorities concerning politics, public administration, culture, technologies, and agriculture. An important source is the minutes of the meetings of the municipal councils which provide a comprehensive picture of the events in the municipalities. They concern municipal administration, management of schools, roads, institutes and so on. Given the presence of the Jewish population in the place, it is possible to expect with certainty that the minutes of the municipal council include references to Jews. References to the Jewish population are also likely to be found in the registers of the school children in Markušovce, which have been preserved from various years. The accounting material allows one to get an overview of the financial management of municipalities. The finding aid only mentions Judaica after 1939, mainly in connection with the Holocaust. Judaica not mentioned in the finding aid may have been preserved from the pre-1939 period. The notary was also responsible for keeping the state registers of marriages, births and deaths, regardless of religions.
- Archival history:
- The documents of the fonds were moved to the Archives in 1956, probably from the relevant local national committee. In 2017, the state registers were taken over from the Municipal Office in Markušovce. The fonds was arranged and made available in the 1960s, when an archival aid was also created (without accurate dating).
- Administrative/biographical history:
- Documents from the District Notary Office in Markušovce have been preserved since 1895, even though there is a presumption that the Office existed earlier. The fonds was created by the District Notary Office which brought together several municipalities. The Office was headed by the district notary with his own and delegated authority. His own authority included dealing, in writing, with the general agenda. Within his delegated authority he dealt with the agenda on behalf of the District Office and partly of the Tax Office. In Hungary, the notary was an elected official of the municipal council, while in Czechoslovakia he was a civil clerk with the right to veto the resolutions of the municipal council. After the establishment of the Czechoslovak Republic, he became a state official appointed by the Minister of the Interior. He was no longer a member of the municipal self-governing bodies, becoming independent of them. The composition of the municipalities that were in its area changed. The core of the district included the following municipalities: Danišovce, Jamnik, Markušovce, Matejovce, Odorín, and Chrasť nad Hornádom.
