The documents of the fonds concern the territory which was under the authority of the District Office in Malacky. They refer to the entire population regardless of ethnicity and religion. Only fragments of the fonds have been preserved but despite this it contains several valuable Judaica due to the existence of a large Jewish population in the district.
Administrative documents, in particular, are relevant. Information on Jews is presumed to be found in several of the many registers that have been preserved, especially the register of trade certificates from 1873-1884 with a journal from 1892 and an index from 1904-1914. There is also a register of fees for trade certificates from 1904-1922 with additions until 1925. Judaica are also likely to be found in registers of aliens and passports validations (1921-1922, additions until 1929) and in the list of ID cards for the small-scale border crossing (1922).
From the general series, it is possible to use especially the reports on the anti-Jewish movement from 1882, rentals of pub licenses (1890), issuing trade licenses, or rejecting the applications thereof, issuing passports, and other documents.
The military series includes numerous registers of various types in which information about Jews is very likely to be found. These are lists of conscripts by years of those born between 1861-1913, registers of unlawful absences of persons subject to military service from 1871-1914, registers of the militia from 1869-1921, registers of the militia and army reservists from 1913-1921, registers of persons subject to military service residing outside the district from 1894-1913, a register of the persons subject to military service by municipalities from 1912, registers of persons subject to military service from 1890-1921, and several other documents.
To a certain extent, it is possible to use the files of the orphan agenda preserved from 1888-1890. They contain information on probate, adoption, approval of purchase contracts in the name of orphans, and minutes of probate proceedings.
The fonds also includes the passport agenda which may concern Jews.
- Archival history:
- The presidential files from 1854-1860 were later transferred to the Land Archives in Budapest. Part of the rest of the fonds was initially incorporated into the fonds of Bratislava County. The other parts were taken over from the District Archives in Bratislava, in 1957 and 1958, by the predecessor of the institution where it is now. After being taken over, the fonds was organised in 1958, and a finding aid was created for it in 1960. Due to the fact that new acquisitions were included in the fonds in 1993, the fonds is currently classified as partially inventoried.
- Administrative/biographical history:
- The district offices (Hungarian: szolgabírói hivatal) as public administration bodies were established on the basis of the decree of the Minister of Interior no. 434 of 25 October 1849. They were the lowest administrative authorities in the country. The District Office in Malacky was established in 1854, being also called the Záhorie District. In 1853-1871, it also had the authority of the lowest judicial instance. In 1872, the judicial system became independent. There were frequent changes of the territorial authority of the Office. The District was part of Bratislava County throughout its existence. The District ("Služnovský") Office in Malacky ceased to exist on 31 December 1922 and its authority was taken over by the District Office in Bratislava.
- System of arrangement:
- The fonds includes official books from 1873-1922, registry finding aids from 1903-1920, and files from 1854-1922. The fonds is divided into presidential and administrative files. The administrative files are sub-divided into four groups by individual agendas (general, military, offences and orphans). The files are arranged in chronological-numerical order. The books are chronologically arranged.
