- Scope and content:
- The fonds contains documents of the self-government of the town of Jevíčko, to which Jewish inhabitants were also subject-although the manors, rather than the town, were responsible for the municipality’s political administration. The following sources concern the town’s Jewish population: lists of voters of the Jewish community, 1919–23; self-governmental status of the Jews, 1849–56; dispute with the Jewish political community over the right of Jews to reside in the Christian municipality, 1850–51; unification of the Jewish political community with the Jevíčko political community, 1919–20; requests by Jews for domicile rights, 1938; Jewish refugees from Halič and Bukovina, 1915–17; construction affairs of the Jewish political community, including designs, 1909; Dr Siegfried Löwit’s Jewish community foundation, 1877–1945; Christian and Jewish cemeteries, 1936–39 (1948); Jewish property, mainly real estate, 1919–44. Documents in c. 138 units of administrative and register agenda from 1850–1922, including meeting minutes, registers of inhabitants, annual accounts and budgets, audits, filing registers, election agenda, military, tax and administrative matters may also relate to Jewish history.
- Archival history:
- The oldest finding aid, a list of privileges, dates from 1592. In the late 17th and 18th centuries, copies of town privileges were made. Another list of documents was made in 1789, but only covered the 1780s. The materials were handled towards the end of the 19th century and then in 1921, 1940 and 1947. After the documents were transferred to the district archive in Litomyšl, the fonds was arranged in 1985.
- Administrative/biographical history:
- The first record of Jevíčko comes from the charter of King Wenceslaus I, purportedly from 1249, and the town was probably founded around 1250 as a result of German colonisation. The controlled town council was established in 1789 and the independent municipality in 1849. From 1850 Jevíčko was a seat of the judicial district and part of the Moravská Třebová political district. After the Munich Agreement of 1938, the judicial district of Jevíčko was assigned to the Boskovice political district. Jevíčko was part of the Moravská Třebová district from 1945 and the Svitavy district from 1960. Jews began moving to Jevíčko in the second half of the 16th century. By 1616, according to the tax register, they had only five houses in the town. The Jewish town was defined by a patent in 1728 and Christian houses standing among the Jewish houses were exchanged. The Jewish town had its own self-government, presided over by a Jewish Vogt for legal and administrative matters and a rabbi for religious matters. Many Jews moved out of Jevíčko after a fire in 1869. In 1921 the Jewish political community was unified with the Christian community.
