- Scope and content:
- The fonds contains documents of the municipal self-government of Tovačov from 1411. The registry from before 1850 has many gaps and post-1850 documents predominate. A few documents from the period of the Protectorate concern the Jewish population: regulations about Jews, residence declarations, lists, property estimates (lands and synagogue), appointment of a forced administrator, draft contract for a synagogue between the emigration office and the town, list of the property of Dr W. Gutmann and individual items of municipal correspondence from 1940–43.
- Archival history:
- The documents were stored under unsuitable conditions in Tovačov town hall. From there they were taken in 1959 to the depository of the former district archive in Kojetín at Tovačov chateau. In 1977 the land registries from the regional archive in Opava were acquired. In 1974–77 the fonds was arranged and given an inventory, which is available at www.archives.cz.
- Administrative/biographical history:
- The first written reference to Tovačov is from 1297. In 1321 it was listed as a town. Its holders included the lords of Cimburk and the Pernsteins. After the thirty years' war the town never recovered its former significance. Jewish settlement started around the mid-15th century; the local Jewish community was not large and a political community was not established. In 1937 the religious community was merged with the neighbouring municipality in Kojetín. The Jewish businessman D. Gutmann became the owner of the Tovačov estate in 1887. A Jewish cemetery and a ceremonial hall by architect M. Fleischer have survived.
