- Scope and content:
- The fonds contains documents of the self-government of the town of Vimperk and materials resulting from the political and judicial responsibilities transferred there. Since there were many Jews among the residents of Vimperk, attention should be paid especially to sources concerning the population register: books of new inhabitants (1805-1938), lists of homeowners (1850-1938), books and files concerning the right of residence (1850-1938), census (1930) and a survey of tenants who left the town or fled (1939). Relevant are also building files and documents concerning the assets of individual households (the Fantl, Kohn, and Eisner families). Other files concern the following matters: the construction of the Vimperk synagogue (house 227 in a suburb, building files 1925-26); the sale of a part of the parcel 1116/9 in 1938; a value estimate of the former synagogue, 1941, and its sale; a copy of the 1946 decree of confiscation of the former synagogue; the factory of Joss & Löwenstein, 1920-35; Jewish refugees from Galicia and Bukovina, 1914-16; and the assets of fugitive Jews, 1938-39. The files concerning industry, commerce and community life likely contain further information about the Jewish population of Vimperk, and the town chronicle of 1479-1945 is also an important source.
- Archival history:
- The town archive was originally stored at the town hall in Vimperk. After the establishment of the district archive in Vimperk in 1954, the town archive was also transferred there. In 1957-59 it was partly arranged. In 1964 the documents were transported to the district archive in Prachatice. The fonds was arranged in 1976-79 and completed in 2007-08.
- Administrative/biographical history:
- The earliest record of the town of Vimperk dates from 1263. The town was the possession of many noble families, the last of them being the Schwarzenbergs. In 1791 the municipality office was established there, and after the abolition of serfdom in 1849 Vimperk became an independent municipality. From 1850-68 it was the seat of the district office. From 1868 it was part of the district of Prachatice until 1938 when it was annexed to Germany until 1945. The seat of the Jewish community of Čkyně was moved to Vimperk in the late 19th century.
