- The fonds contains the documents of the local self-administration of the town of Úštěk. Jewish matters are addressed in inv. 56:- files ordered according to the disposition schedule - real estate remaining after Jewish owners, 1940-44; and inv. 64, which contains a record of the liquidation of the Jewish religious community in Úštěk. Other documents on Jewish matters are found in the unarranged part of the fonds. This includes the folder on Jewish property 1939-41: -assigning administrators to Jewish property,- as well as resident registration cards from roughly 1900-38 and the Jewish register 1938-39.
- Archival history:
- The documents were stored at the municipal registry office in Úštěk and transferred to the district archives in Litoměřice in 1956 and 1995. The documents that arrived in the archives in 1956 were inventoried in 1960 and 1971.
- Administrative/biographical history:
- Úštěk was a small liege town. The first written mention of it as a town in a legal sense is from 1361. There was a Jewish community living in Úštěk as far back as the 14th century, with more frequent reports on Jewish presence in the town coming from the 16th century. After 1848 Úštěk became the centre of its judicial district, politically coming under the Litoměřice district. The industrial expansion of the second half of the 19th century passed the town by, but the growing and trading of hops became a distinguishing feature of the town, with heavy involvement from the Jewish community. There was a Jewish religious community and synagogue in Úštěk. Both the synagogue and Jewish cemetery have been preserved.
