- Scope and content:
- The fonds consists of records arising from the activities of the political administration of the district of Litoměřice until 1938. Select catalogues of presidium files contain explicit references to Jewish issues in four cases: no. 47 - an article from 1853 on Jews in service to Christians; no. 90 - the hostile attitude of Jews towards Catholic clergy, -an investigation from 1859; no. 1201 - promotion of military knowledge by rabbis, 1912; no. 2491 - rumours about Jews from Litoměřice with a plan to assassinate Hitler from 1937. In other records, Jewish matters are explicitly referred to only in the series relating to religious issues, particularly for the storage periods 1850-55: a reference to the Jewish religious community of Třebívlice in the index, files concerning the Jewish religious community of Lovosice - rebuilding of the synagogue (inv. 108); storage period 1855-68: an entry in the index concerning the Jewish religious community of Lovosice, a request for the founding of the Jewish religious community of Terezín (inv. 428); storage period 1905-22: only registry aids with records relating to Jewish issues; storage period 1923-32: a relatively wide range of files, including records of Jewish religious communities in Litoměřice, Lovosice and Úštěk; storage period 1932-38: registry aids with references to Jewish issues; files mostly missing. The series on the health care and charity institutions of the District Office of Litoměřice, storage period 1850-55, contains records concerning the construction of a synagogue in Úštěk (inv. 167). Basic information about Jewish associations can be found in the associations register (Spolkový katastr) from about 1870-1938, in registry aids relating to this series, and sometimes also in files relating to association matters. Information about prominent industrialists of Jewish origin living in the Litoměřice district can be found in the series on business and industry. The registry aids for the storage period 1932-38 in the series on emigration and citizenship contain single items of information, such as the granting of Czechoslovak citizenship to people of Jewish origin.
- Archival history:
- Until 1941 the records in the current fonds were kept in the registry of the district office of Litoměřice, later the Landrat (district councillor) of Leitmeritz. In July 1941 they were taken over by the Reich archive in Liberec. The records of the district office were gradually transferred to the district archives in Litoměřice via three other authorities. In 1949, books and files, mostly from 1906-38, were taken over from the district national committee of Litoměřice. In 1951 the state central archives handed over the other portion of the files, mostly from the period of the First Czechoslovak Republic. The last portion of the fonds, dating from 1850-1906, was found during the sorting of the fonds of the regional office of Litoměřice, which took over the regional archives in Litoměřice from a branch office of the interior ministry in Liberec. These records were handed over to the district archives in Litoměřice in 1962.
- Administrative/biographical history:
- The district office of Litoměřice began its operations as the district governorship of the Česká Lípa region on 1 February 1850. In the reorganisation that came into effect in May 1855, Litoměřice once again became the seat of the region and of the regional court. As districts with joint political and judicial powers were not established in the seats of the regional court, the district governorship of Litoměřice was transformed into a purely political district authority, but only for the area of the former judicial district of Litoměřice. As of 31 August 1868, the district governorship was restored with about the same geographic scope as in 1850, which meant that it integrated three judicial districts,- Litoměřice, Lovosice and Úštěk; in addition, the post of supervisory district governor was established at the district office. In 1919 the governorship was renamed the district political administration of Litoměřice and in 1928 became the district office of Litoměřice. The administrative area of the district office remained unchanged until its abolition in 1938.

- System of arrangement:
- The fonds is arranged in accordance with the original registry system - first the presidium files and associated registry aids (arranged separately), then the rest of the fonds in the following order: books, registry aids, files. The files are sorted by handling period: 1850-1855, 1855-1868, 1868-1885, 1886-1904, 1905-1922, 1923-1932, 1932-1938. Within the storage periods, the records are divided into classes which slightly vary depending on the period. The fonds also contains the building authority's construction files from 1870-1938 and the district office's watercourse registers, together with a collection of maps and documents relating to watercourse registers, which constitute a separate series.
