- Archival history:
- The fonds of the Jewish community of Holešov was taken over by the former district archives in Holešov in the 1950s.
- Administrative/biographical history:
- Jews were probably present in Holešov as early as the late 14th century. In 1850 an independent Jewish political community arose with its own administrative territory covering an area of 4.5 hectares. In 1919 it was merged with the town community and continued to operate as a religious community only. Until the 1960s there was a popular yeshiva. In 1945, the religious community briefly renewed its activities. The synagogue from 1560 (called Šachov synagogue) and a Jewish cemetery have been preserved. The synagogue from 1893 was burnt down in 1942 and most buildings of the original Jewish community have been demolished. In 1899 there were anti-Jewish riots and in 1918 a pogrom with two fatalities. Among the notable members of the Jewish community of Holešov were the 17th-century Rabbi Šabtaj b. Meir ha-Kohen, Rabbi Josef Feilbogen, poet Max Winder and his son, novelist Ludwig Winder.
