- Scope and content:
- The fonds includes documents of the municipal self-government of Kroměříž since 1482. Documents from the post-1850 period prevail, the registry from the period before the municipal office having been preserved in fragments. Materials on the history of the Jewish population are few; a small file of various documents concerns the period of the Protectorate (inv. 2512, the Jewish community, 1909-41).
- Archival history:
- The fonds was registered in the regional archives in 1963. In 1972, an inventory was created. The fonds was later supplemented with acquisitions which are as yet unarranged.
- Administrative/biographical history:
- The first record of Kroměříž is from 1110, when, as a market village, it became the possession of the bishopric of Olomouc. In 1261, it was given town status. The local Renaissance chateau became one of the residences of the bishops and archbishops of Olomouc. From 1850-1945 the town was the seat of the district office. In 1870-1928 Kroměříž was a statutory town. Jews were present in the town from 1322 and a Jewish community existed from at least the early 15th century. The Jewish community was severely affected by the Swedish invasion in 1643. The Jewish religious community, functioning since 1850, was briefly restored in 1945.
