The fonds includes documents of the town’s self-government. For the period of 1850-1945 there are many documents relating to Jewish history, mainly concerning the church, school and cemetery (rebuilding the house of prayer and synagogue, permits of religious education, service instructions for gravediggers and cemetery order, construction of the morgue and ceremony hall); the Israelite hospital (mostly documents relating to its operation); trades (charges on the Jewish canteen, employment of Jews, inns and restaurants operated by Jews, processing of kosher food); education (teaching of Hebrew, lectures and cultural performances of Jewish associations, the Maccabi sports club); and antisemitism (anti-Jewish sentiments, attacks in the press). The fonds also includes documents relating to people who came into contact with the municipal authorities of Karlovy Vary, documentation from the XII and XIII Zionist Congresses which took place in Karlovy Vary in 1921 and 1923 and documentation from the annual conference of the World Zionist Organisation (1922). These materials are still unarranged, completion of their inventory being expected in 2016-17. Valuable information about the origin of the local Jewish religious community can be found in Carlsbad Sights by Dr Rudolf Mannle and Dr Mathias Forster, 1850-69 (the book K 2126, inv. 2272, files 107, 169). The efforts of Jews to acquire right of residence in Karlovy Vary are evidenced in the Karlovy Vary chronicles (especially the previously cited source, files 16,33,149, 158) and in the following printed chronicles:
Karlsbad, Hans Feller, 1874.
- Archival history:
- The archive of the town of Karlovy Vary were transferred to the district archives in Karlovy Vary in 1956. Later there were further acquisitions to the fonds from the period 1958-2014.
- Administrative/biographical history:
- Karlovy Vary was established in the middle of the 14th century and given town privilege by Charles IV in 1370. The town’s prominence increased due the growing spa industry and the expansion of its landed property. Based on Stadion's establishment of the municipal system in 1849 (act 170/1849), Karlovy Vary became the seat of the political district and the district court, and then in 1939-45 the seat of the town district. After the end of German occupation in 1945 the municipal office of Karlovy Vary ceased to exist.
