- Scope and content:
- The fonds contains documents of the Javorník local government from the 17th century to 1945. Most the material relates to the period after 1825, after a fire destroyed nearly the entire registry of the municipal administration. As well as providing information on political and economic history, the fonds is a fundamental source for the town and its surroundings from 1938-45. An important part of the fonds is the town chronicle from 1933-42 with retrospective information from the 13th century onward. Documents relevant to Jewish matters are sporadic; the most important is the inventory unit Jews (inv. 441). This mainly contains correspondence from 1873-1908 between the municipal office and the religious communities in Jeseník and Vidnava on matters concerning Jewish families in Javorník, principally registry issues. The unit also includes regulations of the regional office in Opava on Jewish matters from 1834-39. Jews are also mentioned in documents in the inventory unit National and Political Matters (inv. 674), which contains files on Jewish refugees from Galicia from 1915-17, largely statements on funds used for their accommodation, food and welfare. The summaries also contain personal information on individual families, including their origin and employment. The unit on the “Aryanisation” of Jewish assets (inv. 687) contains correspondence between the municipal office and Landrat (district councillor) in Jeseník about summaries of Jewish assets marked for acquisition from 1939-41. Jewish-related documents could likely be found in files relating to the conferring of burgher rights and acceptance into the municipal union, 1815-38 (inv. 317, 435, 436, 866); right of domicile, 1826-1944 (inv. 312-316, 439, 655, 660, 663, 865, 867); census, 1830-1944 (inv. 333-340, 672, 869); town chronicle, 1934-42 (inv. 396); awarding of trade and business licences, concluding trades, 1826-1944 (inv. 430, 652, 801-804); religious and cultural matters, 1826-1944 (inv. 457, 612, 835); immigrants, 1874-1912 (inv. 528); applications for residence, passport matters, information on residence, 1934-45 (inv. 719); and parcel forms and land registry files, 1836-1924 (inv. 385-387). In the unarranged part of the fonds are land books, 1826-78 (orig. inv. 383a/1-23).
- Archival history:
- The registry of the municipal office was stored in the ground floor of the Javorník town hall until 1945, when the archival material was moved to two rooms in the municipal museum located in the former brewery. In 1952 the archive was moved to house no. 8, then after the Javorník branch of the Šumperk district archives to building no. 54. The fonds was arranged here by archive employee Rudolf Zuber. In 1965 the most recent part of the registry office was arranged; the older files were arranged in 1968. After the Javorník branch was closed in 1977 the fonds was placed temporarily in the building of a women's charity home, and in 1987 it was moved to the main office in Šumperk. In 1996 it was transferred to the newly established state district archives in Jeseník.
- Administrative/biographical history:
- Javorník (German: Jauernig) was founded as a village around the mid-13th century and became a town in the second half of the 14th century. The administrative and judicial powers were entrusted to a reeve, who was subject to a manorial governor at Javorník castle. From 1348 it belonged to the Wroclaw bishops, who attached it to their land assets. Javorník obtained town privileges in 1549. The municipal administration was subject to oversight by the provincial government in Nisa, later in Vidnava, and Jánský Vrch. In 1849 the town received its own local government led by a mayor and councillors. In 1938-45 the Landrat (district councillor) in Jeseník appointed the mayor. Javorník did not have an independent Jewish community; of the 3095 residents of Javorník in 1900, there were just 10 Jews, and in 1930, only eight.
- System of arrangement:
- The fonds is arranged as follows: I. Books insuring (guaranteeing) the rights of the town: A. Municipal legislation books, B. Municipal finance books, C. Municipal administration books; II. Books insuring (guaranteeing) the private rights of the town inhabitants; III. Books of various corporations; IV. Historical books; V. Books of municipal estates. Files: a) registry aids, b) files.
