- Scope and content:
- The fonds contains records of the activities of the district court of Jablonec nad Nisou. Jews are referred to directly in inventory records including those personal estates (for example, the inheritance record of Albert Lederer). The following processed records are also of interest: registration finding aids (registers, lists of names); civil files - personal estates (inheritance records), 1928-49, guardianship, 1928-35; and land registry records - collection of documents, 1846-1932. (The collection of documents relating to land registers from 1938-45 and the land registers themselves are kept at the cadastral office for the Liberec region.) The fonds also includes a a register of legal entities and individuals from the Jablonec region, which was kept at the regional courts in Liberec and Mladá Boleslav, specifically at the Amtsgericht (district court) of Jablonec nad Nisou and Tanvald. This register also contains information on Jewish companies in Jablonec nad Nisou and the surrounding area, including Samuel Nettel, Tiefenbach, Karl Kohn & Co., Simon Sternheimer, Ernst Epstein, Schindler & Co. and Moritz Rand. The unprocessed section of the fonds includes books (registers, lists of names), civil files (including personal estates) and criminal files from 1850 onwards.
- Archival history:
- Some of the records of the district court had already been acquired by the former Reichsarchiv in Liberec, while others were later taken over directly by the state archives of Jablonec nad Nisou in 1949-53. In 1960 and 1961 the fonds was partially processed and a temporary inventory list was added to it. In the subsequent period, extensive additional acquisitions were made during regular archival appraisals at the district court. In parallel with this, the fonds is being gradually processed, the most recent result of which is a temporary inventory list from 2014.
- Administrative/biographical history:
- The district court of Jablonec nad Nisou was established in 1850 as a court of first instance in the newly created judicial system following the demise of the patrimonial administration. From 1855-68 its duties were carried out by the Bezirksamt (political and judicial district office) of Jablonec nad Nisou. The district court later regained its independence. The regional court in Liberec and the Oberlandesgericht (higher regional court) in Prague were courts of higher instance. The Jablonec court operated as Amtsgericht (district court) from October 1938 until May 1945; this material comprises a separate fonds. The original district court renewed its activities in May 1945. After 1949 its jurisdiction was expanded to cover the entire administrative district of Jablonec.
