- Scope and content:
- The fonds contains the records of the political administration of the Jablonec nad Nisou district. Jews are referred to directly in inventory records relating to the following from 1855-1904: religious matters - rabbis, the Jewish religious community (inv. 150); Jews, 1874-76 (inv. 156); the Jewish register, Jablonec, 1878 (inv. 156); and the Jewish cemetery, Jablonec, 1875 (inv. 156). The period 1905-38 includes ritual matters - the Jewish religious community and rabbis, 1905-37 (inv. 179); and presidium files - various reports of the Bezirkshauptmannschaft (district head office) relating to circulars and queries from the presidium of the Vice-regency in relation to educational and personnel matters, conversion to another faith and reports from the Jewish religious community. Also of interest are records on state citizenship and right of domicile, religious and ritual matters, charity institutes and foundations and businesses, trade and industry and associations. The unprocessed section of the fonds includes inn licences, association registers, land registers from the 1870s until 1949 and a list of refugees from the border region (20 November 1938).
- Archival history:
- The records of the district office were placed in the registry of the district office's headquarters, where they remained until the beginning of the 1950s. Material was lost from the registry in September 1938 due to the deliberate destruction of files prior to the Nazi occupation and after the Second World War, when records were wilfully appraised and damaged by employees of the district national committee. From 1950 the records were kept for a while at the state archives of Jablonec nad Nisou, where they were appraised by employees of the district national committee under the supervision of the district archivist in 1954. After this irresponsible intervention, which led to considerable damage and loss, the records were transferred to the district archives of Jablonec nad Nisou. The records were rearranged per the fonds’s original arrangement and were inventoried in 1963-65. A catalogue was produced for the presidium files in 1968-70.
- Administrative/biographical history:
- The Bezirksamt (political and judicial district office) of Jablonec nad Nisou was established in 1855 as a court of first instance for political and judicial administration. In 1868, after the separation of judicial powers, the Bezirkshauptmannschaft (district head office) was founded for the political administration of the judicial districts of Jablonec nad Nisou and Tanvald. It was renamed the district political administration in 1919 and became the district office in 1927. In 1919 the tax department was detached and a separate tax administration was established. After 1927 the district office took over the agenda of the disbanded district assembly. In 1938 the district was occupied by German forces and the functions of the district office were taken over by the Landrat. The Jewish religious community, officially established on 28 August 1893 for the Jewish population of the judicial districts of Jablonec nad Nisou and Tanvald was active in the political district of Jablonec nad Nisou.
