- Archival history:
- The documents of the municipal office were originally stored at the town hall in Jirkov. In 1934 the pre-1850 documents were transferred to the municipal archives in Chomutov. After 1945, a separate municipal archive was established in Jirkov, including the post-1850 documents of the former municipal office and later part of the earlier documents from the municipal archives in Chomutov. After the establishment of the district archives of Chomutov in Kadaň (since 1992 called the state district archives), some of the Jirkov documents stored in Chomutov as well as those from the liquidated municipal archives in Jirkov were transferred there. The documents were concentrated into a single collection which was arranged and inventoried. Other documents from the state regional archives in Litomerice and other archives were added in later years.
- Administrative/biographical history:
- Jirkov was first mentioned in 1352 and as a town in 1362. The town belonged to the estate of Červený Hrádek, except in the second half of the 14th and the early 15th centuries when part of the town belonged to the estate of Nový Žeberk. In 1796 a controlled municipality office was established in the town, and after 1849 Jirkov was an autonomous municipality. From 1850 it was part of the judicial district of Jirkov. A Jewish community was first mentioned in Jirkov in the 17th century. The synagogue was constructed in 1846-47.
