The fonds previously contained minutes from meetings of the Jewish political community in Kyjov from 1883 to 1919, which were sorted into a separate fonds, but the fonds still contains a book of published domicile certificates by the Jewish (political) community from 1884 to 1919. - Archival history:
- The documents were originally stored with their creator, but in modern times they had various fates and the fonds was comprised by transfers from various institutions. Some of the documents were taken over by the State District Archives in Hodonín in 1961 from the abolished District Archives in Kyjov and older documents, including records, were taken over in 1997 from the Kyjov Town Museum. Most of the files was handed over by the town of Kyjov between 1965 and 1966. The fonds was supplemented by transfers in 1971 from the State Regional Archives in Brno (today the Moravian Provincial Archives) and from the State District Archives in Uherské Hradiště. The fonds was arranged in 2001-2003.
- Administrative/biographical history:
- The oldest written mention of Kyjov dates from 1126. Kyjov (Gaya in German) has always been among the important seats in South Moravia and in the 14th century gained town status. It was held by a monarch, a church council and various members of nobility. In 1548, the inhabitants of Kyjov purchased it from their lord and became serfs of the royal chamber, so from a legal point of view Kyjov is a royal chamber town. Until 1848, Kyjov was the centre and principal of the municipal manor. In 1786 a regulated town hall was established. After 1848, Kyjov became an independent municipality. The Jewish settlement in Kyjov provably dates at least from the 16th century and despite Christians’ attempts to expel Jews a medium-sized Jewish community developed there. From 1848 to 1919, there was an independent Jewish political community, which in 1919 was merged with the Christian part of town. From 1850 to 1949, Kyjov was the seat of the political and judicial district.
