- Scope and content:
- The fonds includes archival material resulting from the activities of the court for the territory of the judicial district of Poběžovice where several places were inhabited by Jewish population. On the basis of the nature of the agenda of district courts one may assume that in different parts of the files researchers will be able to study matters of the Jewish population, for example inheritance issues, estate transfers, etc. Searching will be facilitated by the preserved indexes.
- Archival history:
- The documents of the district court in Poběžovice were stored in the registry office of the District court, later Amtsgericht (district court). After 1945, they were probably moved into the building of Horšovský Týn District Court. During the World War II, a part of the files was transferred to the German Reich Archives in Liberec from where they were moved in November 1949 to the regional archive depository in Plasy. In 1948, a part of the files, mainly land book issues, was stored in the Prague archives and a year later the documents from 1850-1897 were handed over to the regional archival depository in Plasy. A record of the aforementioned archival documents being taken into possession of the District Archives has not been preserved. In 1970, the State Archives in Pilsen handed over to the District Archives 4 packages of documents from 1906-1932 and in 1975 the District Archives took over about 100 registers of the Poběžovice District Court.
- Administrative/biographical history:
- The creator of the fonds is the first instance court established in July 1850 which had the jurisdiction within the newly created judicial district of Poběžovice. In 1855-1868, the first instance judiciary was incorporated into district offices and thus the political and judicial administrations merged. This, however, did not work, so from 31 August 1868 district courts became independent again. During the First Czechoslovak Republic district courts continued to be the basic units of the judiciary until 1938 when the entire agenda was handed over to the German state and Amtsgericht (District Court) was set up. After World War II, there was a provisional reorganisation of the judiciary which included a territorial organisation whereby the jurisdiction of the District Court in Poběžovice was transferred to the District Court in Horšovský Týn.
