- Scope and content:
- Despite the fact that a Jewish community existed in Lednice from the end of the 17th century onwards, there is no inventory unit in the fonds of the town of Lednice specifically devoted to Jews. However, files from the following series will be of interest for the study of Jewish history: land registers, registers of property tenure and written documents on cadastral registers from the years 1567-1924; from 1848-1945 there are documents on population records of the town - registers of deceased persons and registers of coroner's inquests from 1896-1930 (4 books), documents on municipal elections and registers of voters 1850-1936 (29 inventory units) and domicile certificates 1850-1942 (1 inventory unit). Jewish house owners can be expected among building owners, the construction (building) files of which have been preserved from the years of 1880-1938 (e.g. Hirsch, Grünbaum, Rothschild). Relevant information may also be found in the memorial book of the municipality from 1919-1935.
- Archival history:
- The early history of the written documents of the town of Lednice unknown. Several documents were probably destroyed during the frequent relocation of the municipal office at the turn of the 19th and 20th century, and the fonds also suffered great losses during the war in 1945. In 1948 the remaining documents were stored in the attics and cellars of various buildings. From here they were taken over by the District Archives in Břeclav in 1953, and in 1963 were transferred to the Břeclav District State Archives in Mikulov. The fonds was arranged here and inventoried in 1968. Because this arrangement was inadequate for today's requirements, in 2014 the fonds was designated an unarranged fonds and will be arranged again.
- Administrative/biographical history:
- Lednice (Eisgrub in German) is first mentioned in sources dating from 1222. From the 14th century until 1848 it belonged to the property of the house of Liechtenstein. A market town from the end of the 16th century, it was the seat of the estate of the same name, to which among others the town of Hustopeče also belonged from the end of the 16th century. At the beginning of the 19th century the Liechtenstein dynasty constructed a neo-romantic chateau, which as a part of the Lednice-Valtice complex is a UNESCO monument. From the end of the 17th century a Jewish community resided here. From 1849/1850-1919 there was a Jewish political community here; the Jewish religious community was destroyed in 1938. In the same year Lednice, within the Sudeten territory, was surrendered to Germany and temporarily became part of the Landrat of Mikulov within the framework of the region of Niederdonau. During the period of 1850-1855 Lednice belonged to the political district of Hustopeče, in 1855-1868 to Břeclav, in 1868-1869 to Hodonín, in 1868-1949 to Mikulov and from 1949 to Břeclav. Judicial administration was performed in the years of 1850-1869 by the district court in Břeclav, in 1869-1949 by Mikulov and from 1949 by Břeclav.
