- The fonds contains written documents from the civil and criminal District Court in Břeclav. Its significance for Jewish history lies primarily in the probate and inheritance files (call number D, later call number IV, then A and later again D) from 1849-1948, dealing with inheritance proceedings from deceased persons, including those of Jewish origin, or guardian files from the years of 1898-1948 (call number E, later call number IV and call number P), which dealt with the granting of guardianship and administration of property of minors, extramarital children or persons from whom legal status had been withdrawn for reasons of sickness or alcoholism. These files are of great significance for Jewish genealogy and for the study of social or property relations. Relevant information may also be contained in the court registers from 1850-1897, as well as various disputes and criminal cases dealt with by this court and written records of real estate, primarily land registers and collections of documents for land registers.
- Archival history:
- The written documents from the first handling of the District Court in Břeclav were originally transferred to the State Archives in Brno (today the Moravian Provincial Archives), from where they were transferred to the Břeclav District State Archives in Mikulov. Documents from the third and second handling were also transferred there in 1965. The fonds was arranged in 1969.
- Administrative/biographical history:
- The District Court in Břeclav (Lundenburg in German) was established in 1850. It operated with minor alterations to its territorial jurisdiction until 1949, and following administrative reforms its successor operates to this day. The jurisdiction of this court covered the Jewish religious and political communities in Břeclav, Podivín and until 1867 also in Lednice.
