- Scope and content:
- The fonds comprises records of the administration of the estate of Ostrov. Most of the records date from the time when the estate was owned by members of the Habsburg dynasty. For the study of Jewish history, the following files will be of particular interest: inv. No. 321 - A dispute concerning jurisdiction over the Jews in Hroznětín from 1821-1823; inv. No. 292 - Jews which includes files from 1821-1857. Records concerning the Jewish population can also be expected in land books and probably in other files, too (especially in matters of lease). Other older archival records related to the Jewish population of the manor of Ostrov can be found in the following fonds: the Manorial Office of Ostrov 1516-1813 ([1965]), the Baden Secret Judicial Office Rastatt 1588-1771 (1774), the Tuscan Administration of Estates in Prague, and the Separated files of Ostrov 1808-1848.
- Archival history:
- The land books and files were kept in various buildings in Ostrov until 1955 when they were taken to Klášterec nad Ohří where there was a branch of the former State Archives in Kadaň. In 1969 they were relocated to the Žlutice branch of the State Archives in Plzeň, and finally, in 2006, to the Klášter branch of the State Regional Archives in Plzeň.
- Administrative/biographical history:
- Ostrov became a royal town in the 13th century. The manor of Ostrov, however, did not arise until the late 15th century. Among the most important owners of the manor were the Habsburgs (1811-1918). After 1918, the estate was put under the forced administration and in 1922 it was taken over by the Czechoslovak State Forests Comp. Until 1850 the manorial office pursued the economic management of the manor and on the basis of delegated powers it also functioned as the lowest instance of state administration. After 1850, the administration office of the estate mainly dealt with economic issues.
