- The fonds represents an important source for the history of Czech and German education in Moravia, i.e., for primary schools (national), public schools (secondary) and general secondary schools with a school leaving examination (teacher training colleges, gymnasiums, lyceums etc.). It contains administrative, organisational and personnel files, personal files of teachers, professors and school inspectors, documents about foundation of schools and construction of school buildings, teaching curriculums, statistics etc. The following documents, particularly in the older part of the fonds, concern the Jewish community: Primary and public schools (inter alia, list of children of Jewish faith at Czech national schools) from 1925. In the later part of the fonds, gymnasiums and teacher training colleges in Brno and suburbs, Brno-Jewish gymnasium 1935–1940 and Associations’ Jewish Gymnasium in Brno 1935–1940.
- Archival history:
- Documents of the Moravian Provicial School Board were transferred to the Moravian Provincial Archives in two parts. The archives took over the older part (files from 1874-1936) in 1946 and arranged it in the years 1969-1970. The later part (from the years 1935-1949) was taken over from the Regional National Committee in Brno in 1956 and was arranged in 1966. The records office caught fire in 1945, so only parts of the files of the presidium part, the personal files of German teachers and professors and administrative files survived.
- Administrative/biographical history:
- After the start of dualism, school matters were subordinated to the Ministry of Culture and Education, and in the province to the Province School Board and other subordinate bodies. The Province School Board in Moravia was founded by a province law of 12 January 1870. It supervised the district and local school boards, it managed the teacher training colleges in the country, the training schools and secondary schools. It was headed by the vice regent or the deputy he appointed, and other members were appointed for 6 years by the ministry and approved by the emperor. In 1905 the Board was divided into two sections, a Czech and German one, and in the same year the presidium department came into being. After 1918 the Board also supervised the primary schools, public schools, secondary schools and teacher training institutes and training schools. In 1928 the province was expanded to include the Opava and Těšín areas. In 1929 remedial schools were also put under the supervision of the Board. The provincial inspectors performed the actual supervision of the schools. There were three types of schools established in this manner-national, secondary and specialist schools, and private schools were also founded in addition to open public ones. In 1940 under the Nazi Occupation the electability of local and district school boards was eliminated, in 1942 the duties of the Provincial School Board were transferred to the departments of the provincial office (Landesbehörde-Hauptabteilung II. Erziehung und Volksbildung). After liberation the Provincial School Board was renewed and part of its duties transferred to the Provincial National Committee. The Provincial School Boards were abolished by a law of 21.12.1948 and their competence was transferred to the regional national committees.
