The fonds includes documents of the self-government of the town of Moravská Ostrava. Items relating to the Jewish population can be found in in residence registers from 1900-1938 and particularly in the files of the old registry, namely: Exercising the right to run a pub and the administration of individual inns (1792-1864), Statements from Jewish registers (1852-1868), Jewish marriages (1827-1836), The baptised Jews, Circulars and regulations relating to the authorisation of Jews to own and lease real estate, The decisions of the municipality on settling Jews in the town (1824-1937), and The agenda of residence certificates and business licenses. Another type of documents relating to the Jewish population is inheritance and court files (disputes relating to recovery of debts).
In the central registry attention should be paid to the following documents: The establishment of the Jewish religious community in Ostrava, The establishment of a Jewish school (1868-1882), An application of the Jewish religious community for subsidies for the Jewish school with a list of pupils (1890), A circular of the district head's office in Místek from 1879 about entries in the Jewish registers, The lists of employees of 42 associations in the town eligible to vote for the Imperial Council (among them being the Jewish religious community) (1900), A document of the Jewish religious community regarding the election of the new rabbi (1894), and the Agenda of domicile right.
In the new registry the history of Jews is referred to in the following documents: Surveying the construction site for the synagogue in Ostrava, including an article on the construction of the synagogue and several drawings (1909-1913), The Jewish vocational school in Moravská Ostrava (subsidies) (1926-1932), The Jewish cemetery in Moravská Ostrava (construction, extension, general affairs (1872)1901-1925), The list of people of Jewish origin, property owners and their transfers (1939-1941), The purchase of the Jewish property in Nová Ves for the purposes of the Danube-Oder canal (1941), Applications of Jewish associations (mainly subsidies) (1919-1939). Attention should also be paid to the agendas of trade, commerce and domicile right. Documents related to Jewish history can undoubtedly alsobe found in other files of the fonds that are not mentioned here.
- Archival history:
- Documents were originally kept in the Old Town Hall of Ostrava. After the establishment of the municipal archives in 1923, this institution took over deeds, official books and a part of the files of the old registry. The bulk of the documents of the middle registry was transferred to the municipal archives in 1927. The files of the new registry were transferred to the archives in parts during the 1950s and 1960s. In 1961, it received from the State Archives in Opava a larger number of criminal, guardianship and inheritance files from the jurisdiction of the Municipality of Moravská Ostrava until 1850. Further acquisitions of the fonds followed after 2000.
- Administrative/biographical history:
- The first record of the town of Moravská Ostrava dates back to 1267. Until 1848 it was a tributary town of the Olomouc bishops, later archbishops. Moravská Ostrava was the manorial authority for three villages - Přívoz, Lhotka and Nová Ves. In 1787 the controlled town council was established there. Since 1850, Moravská Ostrava was a separate municipality. In 1924, the city of Greater Ostrava was created merging Přívoz, Vítkovice, Mariánské Hory, Zábřeh and Nová Ves with Moravská Ostrava. In 1941, Moravská Ostrava was declared a statutory city and enlarged with 8 municipalities of the political district of Frýdek and 4 municipalities of the Moravian-Silesian district.
