- Scope and content:
- This fonds covers the history of the Nazi Occupation of the town of Moravská Ostrava. The activities of the Magistrat in 1941-1945 can be primarily examined in the High Commissioner's decisions and the presidium correspondence. A valuable source on the Jewish population is the documents about the deportation and mass murder of Jews, especially the lists of seven transports of Jews to Nisko nad Sanem and to Terezín in 1939-1943. The fonds also includes files of raids on Jewish families on 14 October 1941. A large part of the material of the Moravská Ostrava branch of the District Head’s Office in Frýdek includes the filled out forms with attachments about the confiscated Jewish property (the districts of Moravská Ostrava, Místek, Frýdek, Valašské Meziříčí, and Vsetín) from 1940-1944. Another relevant material is the documentation of the construction, adaptation and destruction of Jewish cultural sites in Ostrava in the period of 1924-1953.
- Archival history:
- The first documents were handed over to the Municipal Archives in Ostrava after 1945. Unfortunately, there are no records of this event. Other transfers occurred in the first half of the 1960s. The fonds was arranged in 1968 and added to in 1991 and 1996.
- Administrative/biographical history:
- By a government regulation Moravská Ostrava was declared a statutory town on 1 July 1941 which, due to delegated powers, also exercised powers of the abolished District Office of Moravská Ostrava. The Magistrat of the Town of Moravská Ostrava was abolished on 29 April 1945, being replaced by the Central National Committee in Ostrava.
