- The fonds is a fundamental historical source for the history of the former political district of Moravia-Silesia in 1900-1941. For the years of 1855-1868 (preserved in fragments) and 1868-1900 (the Moravian-Silesian Judicial District fell under the District Marshal's Office in Místek) it is necessary to research the fonds of the District Office in Místek. The fonds includes census records from 1900, 1910 and 1921, which contain information about the Jewish population. Jewish history is also referred to in the following documents: Changes of religion (1917-1920), The construction of the synagogue in Vitkovice (1909-1911), The establishment of a prayer house in Záhřeb nad Odrou (1891-1914) and The Jewish religious community in Ostrava (1866-1941) which contains information about a private Jewish school, the statutes of the Jewish religious association statutes in Polish Ostrava, a list of Jewish children born in 1860-1876 and describing the living conditions in the village in 1937-1938. Relevant information for the history of the Jews can also be found in the business documents relating to the approvals of businesses, factories and enterprises (e.g. the Cement Plant of Adolf Suess et al. in Zábřeh (1885-1941), Markus and Armin Spitzer Bros., the Foundry in Moravská Ostrava (1893-1921)), innkeepers concessions (e.g. the Markus Strassmann brewery in Moravská Ostrava) and department stores (e.g. Brouk a Babka, Bachner, Rix). It is also necessary to pay attention to the agenda of Foreign citizenships (1924-1927), Lists of expelled foreigners and foreign nationals chosen to be deported (mostly Jews) (1938-1939), and the Correspondence on housing matters concerning the Jewish religious community and Jewish associations, including reports of empty flats, especially the Jewish one (1938-1940).
- Archival history:
- The documents of the fonds were transferred in parts to the Municipal Archives in Ostrava from the former District Office in 1941, 1943, and 1945. In 1952, the documents of the District Office were moved to the State Archives in Opava. There the material, disrupted by moving, was partly arranged and a provisional list was created for it. The fonds of the District Office of Moravská Ostrava was returned to the Municipal Archives in Ostrava in 1961-1962. In the following years, the fonds was gradually expanded. The last major acquisition was census records from 1921, acquired from the Provincial Archives in Opava in 1993.
- Administrative/biographical history:
- In 1850-1855, the Moravian-Silesian judicial district was governed by the District Marshal's Office in Místek. In 1855-1868, the mixed district office worked in Ostrava, and from 1868 until the establishment of the Moravian-Silesian political district in 1900 the Moravian-Silesian judicial district was again governed by the District Marshal's Office in Místek. On 1 September 1900 the District Marshal's Office was established in Moravská Ostrava which worked there until 1941 when its function was taken over by the Municipality of the City of Moravská Ostrava.
