- Scope and content:
- The fonds includes archival records concerning the social and economic histories (probate files, inheritance and guardianship files, seizures of property, bankruptcies, files concerning criminal prosecutions and others), the histories of the labour movement and political parties (mainly press offences from 1924-1938, and confiscations of newspapers, leaflets and other illegal press materials). Jewish aspects are evident in particulars providing information on the assets of the Jewish population (probate, inheritance and guardianship files). Criminal files, especially from 1938-1940, give evidence of the anti-Jewish sentiment in the town.
- Archival history:
- In 1954, the documents were taken over by the State Archives in Opava, from where they were transferred to the Municipal Archives in Ostrava in 1961. Other takeovers occurred in 1962 and 1964. Recently, the fonds has been enlarged with a series of acquisitions. The fonds was partially arranged in 1968 and 1986.
- Administrative/biographical history:
- The District Court was established on 1 July 1850. Felonies and misdemeanours committed within its jurisdiction were prosecuted by the District Court in Místek (1850-1855) and then investigated by the Court of Investigation (1855-1873), also located in Místek. Until 1922 it fell within the jurisdiction of the Regional Court in Nový Jičín, then, until 1949, within the newly established Regional Court of Ostrava. In 1922-1939 it also served as a press offences court for the entire circuit of the Regional Court of Ostrava. In 1941 its territorial jurisdiction was changed and renamed the District Court for Moravská Ostrava-západ.
