In 1890, after completing a law degree in Prague, he opened a legal practice in Jindřichův Hradec, where he was active until the founding of Czechoslovakia. He later held the post of departmental councillor at the Ministry of Education. He was active in the Czech-Jewish movement from as early as the 1890s, when he was the editor of the Czech-Jewish Calendar.
