- The fonds contains personal documents and files, correspondence with research institutions in Germany and the USA, and manuscripts of studies on ancient Rome.
- Administrative/biographical history:
- Arthur Stein was born in Vienna on 10 June 1871. In 1892–1897 he studied history, geography, classical and German philology at the University of Vienna. From 1903 he was active in Prague, initially at the first German secondary school in the New Town. In 1914 he defended his post-doctoral dissertation on the history of Egypt in the Roman period. In 1915 he was appointed a private associate professor of Greek and Roman history at the German Charles-Ferdinand University in Prague, where he held the post of Dean of the Philosophy Faculty from 1928 to 1929. After the signing of the Munich Agreement he was no longer allowed to give lectures. He was deported from Prague to the Terezín ghetto (Transport Aan) on 6 July 1942. He was liberated in Terezín in May 1945. After returning to Prague, he resumed his epigraphic and prosopographical studies. He died in Prague on 15 November 1950.
