- Administrative/biographical history:
- Josef Neumann (1856–1923), "Der Oberste Ruhestandes, Kommandant des Ersatzbataillons des Infanterieregiments N.28". He was born in the town of Miroslav, Moravia. His military career began in 1875, when he joined the army as a private. After holding various non-commissioned officer positions, he graduated from officer school and advanced in his career, becoming a lieutenant colonel in 1909. In 1910 he was transferred to the Military Archives (Kriegsarchiv) in Vienna. In 1912 he went into retirement. On 15 August 1914 he was reactivated and appointed commander of the supplementary district headquarters in Jindřichův Hradec. At his own request he was sent to the Front, where he took part in heavy fighting in the Carpathian Mountains and Galicia. In 1915 he was decorated for his action in these battles. He was later active in Šibenik, Croatia, where he requested that the ruler grant noble status to him. He acquired the predicate “Edler von Neumann”, as well as a coat of arms. He died in 1923.
