- Administrative/biographical history:
- Dr. Otto Muneles was an expert in Jewish studies, Hebraist, librarian of the Jewish Museum in Prague. He was born in Prague on 8 January 1894. Since his early childhood he was educated in the spirit of Jewish traditions. He studied classical philology at the German University in Prague. At the start of the First World War he became influenced by Eastern European Hasidism and lived in Galicia. He returned to Prague in 1922 and continued with his university studies, this time focused on Semitic philology. In the inter-war period he worked as an actuary for the Prague Burial Society. During the Second World War he was involved as an external associate in the cataloguing of books at the Central Jewish Museum in Prague. In 1943 he was deported to the Terezín ghetto, where he was included in a team of Hebraists to research Hebrew books. After the war he worked for the ritual department of the Jewish Religious Community of Prague. From 1950 he was the chief librarian and a leading specialist at the Jewish Museum. He died in Prague on 4 March 1967.
