He was born in Prague on 28 April 1881, attended the rabbinical seminary in Frankfurt am Main and read Oriental Studies at the German University in Prague, graduating in 1909. At that time he was already focusing on the history of the Jews in Bohemia, particularly in Prague. He contributed to a number of specialist periodicals. After completing his studies, he worked as a secondary-school teacher of religion.
