- Administrative/biographical history:
- A Jewish presence in Žatec is documented from the second half of the 15th century. In the wake of two expulsions in the 16th and 17th centuries, it was not until the middle of the 19th century that the number of Jewish families there rapidly increased. A Jewish religious community was probably established there in 1864. In 1931 it incorporated the area of the disbanded communities of Měcholupy (Michelob) and Liběšice (Liebeschitz). The community was disbanded after the annexation of the Sudetenland by Nazi Germany in 1938 but resumed its activities after the Second World War.
