- Jews were already living in Winterthur in the Middle Ages. In connection with the persecution of Jews during the plague period, the Jews of Winterthur were burned at the Brühlberg on 18 September 1349. In the course of the 15th century there were usually only one to three Jewish families in the city. It was not until the 19th century that an influx of Jewish people was possible in Winterthur. In 1842 the merchant Hermann Bernheim from Lengnau was able to settle in the present Töss district and the merchant Jonas Biedermann from Gailingen was able to settle in the present Veltheim district (he was naturalised in 1867). In 1860 Bernheim was incorporated in Winterthur. In the following years there was a further influx of Jewish families from the Aargau Surbtal, Alsace and southern Germany. In 1878 and on 15 March 1886, respectively, a Jewish community was founded ("Jüdische Cultusgenossenschaft Winterthur & Veltheim"), since 1924 the "Israelitische Kultusgemeinde Winterthur".
