Helena Weil, née Steinsbergova, was born in Hranice (Moravian Weisskirchen, Czechoslovakia) on 22 February 1948. She was the daughter of Robert Steinsberg and Ilsa Steinsbergova, née Gessler. She was brought to Switzerland by her father to her cousin Trude Fein-Steinsberg in Kilchberg (ZH), where she attended secondary school and trained as a surveyor draughtswoman. In 1972, she married Hans Andreas Weil.
Hans Andreas Weil, an instructor and adult educator, was born in Zurich on 11 September 1944. He was the son of Heinrich (Henri) Weil, a merchant, and Rita Weil, née Moritzson, a nurse. He finished an apprenticeship as electrician and attended the technical school for aircraft electronics where he earned a degree as an avionics engineer (1972). From 1969 to 2009, he worked as an instructor for Swissair and Lufthansa.
