- Scope and content:
- The collection documents the journalistic and historical work of Heinz Roschewski. It includes numerous articles and research documents as well as personal papers and correspondence. In addition, there are copies of censorship files concerning the reporting of the St. Gallen "Volksstimme" during the Second World War from the Federal Archives in Bern, which were also handed over to the AfZ in 2005.
- Archival history:
- The collection was transferred to the AfZ (Archiv für Zeitgeschichte) in several deliveries between 2005 and 2011. The files of the deliveries in 2010 and 2011, following the death of Heinz Roschewski, supplement many of the documents already recorded. The photos were accessioned digitally and returned to his widow, Suzi Roschewski.

Heinz Roschewski, a journalist and historian, was born in Zurich on 3 November 1919 and died in Bern on 20 March 2010. He grew up in Zurich and Arlesheim near Basel and was a citizen of Winterthur. His parents were Lasar Roschewski, a tobacco cutter/tobacco manufacturer, from Odessa and Fanny Grienbaum of Munich. In 1937, he graduated from high school at the Realgymnasium Basel and in 1938-1939 he earned his commercial diploma. From 1985 to 1992, he studied history at the University of Bern. In 1943, he became editorial secretary, in 1947 editor and in 1954 editor-in-chief of the Social Democratic "Volksstimme" in St. Gallen. From 1967 to 1984, he was editor-in-chief of the information department at Radio DRS. From 1994, he worked in the Federal Archives as a federal expert in the processing and editing of refugee files. From 1947 to 1972, Roschewski was a board member of the SPS (Social Democratic Party of Switzerland) and from 1955 to 1967 member of the SPS in the Grand Council of the Canton of St. Gallen.
He was the author and editor of contemporary studies on Swiss and Jewish history as well as vice-president of the Jewish Community of St. Gallen. From 1985 to 1988, Roschewski was president of the Jewish Community Bern and was a member of the central committee of the SIG (Swiss Federation of Jewish Communities). He was married to Suzanne Liatowitsch; they had one daughter, Ruth Mirjam Vardon.
