- Archival history:
- In 2006, through the mediation of Rolf Bloch, the Archives of Contemporary History (AfZ) received records relating to the work of Herbert Herz as a delegate of Yad Vashem. The "Righteous Among the Nations" department honours persons who saved Jews or helped Jews to flee during the National Socialist era. He initiated and organised some of these honours.
- Administrative/biographical history:
- Herbert Herz was born in Augsburg on 7 May 1924 to Simon and Meta, née Eichenbrunner. In 1934, the family fled to Dijon; in 1942 Herz barely escaped deportation and joined the Résistance (FTP-MOI) in Grénoble in 1943. His brother Emanuel was murdered in Auschwitz after he was arrested while trying to enter Switzerland illegally. He was sent back to France by the Swiss authorities. In 1996, Herbert Herz was awarded the French Order of the Legion of Honour for his services. After studying engineering, he was employed at CERN in Geneva. Since 1986, Herbert Herz was regional delegate for Switzerland and Savoy for Yad Vashem, Department "Righteous Among the Nations". In memory of his brother, Herbert Herz did not take Swiss citizenship throughout his life. In 2007, he moved to Ferney-Voltaire, France. He died in 2016.
