There is also a list of Rudolf Frank's literary works in the individual holdings. Rudolf Frank's publications are held in the AfZ library.
- Archival history:
- The holdings were donated to the AfZ in 1999 and 2000 by Dr Vincent C Frank-Steiner.
- Administrative/biographical history:
- Rudolf Frank was born in Mainz on 16 September 1886 and died on 25 October 1979 in Basel. He was the son of Carl Theodor and Mathilde Frank-Ebertsheim and studied political science and law in Munich, Zurich, Heidelberg, Berlin and Giessen. He earned a doctorate in 1908 and took acting lessons from 1909 onward. In 1914, Frank became a volunteer in the First World War. Starting in 1918, he worked as a director and dramaturge in Frankfurt am Main and Darmstadt and began dubbing American films in 1926. After Hitler's assumption of power in 1933, Frank published under various pseudonyms. His novel ‘Der Schädel des Negerhäuptlings Makaua’ was burned; he was expelled from professional chambers and was banned from writing. In 1936, Frank emigrated to Vienna and to Switzerland in 1937. His German citizenship and doctorate were revoked; in Switzerland, he was banned from working. Because of publications under various pseudonyms, Frank was arrested in 1943 and deported to various camps. In 1944, he was released and moved to Basel. In 1948, he was granted permanent asylum as well as a reparation payment in 1957; his doctor title was restored to him in 1958.
