- The collection primarily documents the lawsuit brought against Ernst Erdös and a dozen co-defendants for banned Communist activities between 1940 and 1942. In addition to the indictment, verdict, and correspondence, it also contains documentary material and brochures on the Trotskyist movement in Switzerland as well as biographical documents.
- Archival history:
- The estate was donated to the AfZ in 2004 by Dr. Leopold Kohn who published the book “Ernst Erdös: Schriften aus dem Nachlass” together with Peter A Schmid in 2004. In 2016, Silvia Herzig, Ernst Erdös’s life partner, supplied the book.
- Administrative/biographical history:
- Ernst Erdös was born in Vienna on 5 February 1919 and died on 6 March 1998 in Zurich. Erdös was a Hungarian citizen and son of a jeweller. He attended elementary school and high school in Vienna. After Austria’s ‘Anschluss’ in 1938, he entered Switzerland via Berlin. His mother was murdered in Auschwitz in 1944. His father survived in Budapest. In 1938, he began studying chemistry at ETH Zurich and worked as a research assistant in the electrical industry. Erdös was part of the Trotskyist-Communist movement and was arrested on 11 June 1940 on suspicion of Communist activities. In 1941, he was prosecuted with 12 other individuals under the collective term “Dr. Walter Nelz und Konsorten“. In 1942, he was released due to lack of evidence thanks to the engagement of his lawyer, Dr. Veit Wyler. Erdös left the Trotskyist movement and became part of the Social Democratic Party of Switzerland. After his retirement, he studied history and philosophy at the University of Zurich, graduating in 1989. Erdös was a well-known Hegel specialist.
