The holdings District and Landgravate of the State Archive of Thurgau contain numerous documents from the period between 1460 and 1798, whilethe sub-division Chief Magistrate contains several files in the section “Manuals“ that are of interest from a Jewish perspective.
These include a file on the so-called “Oath of the Jews“ to the landgraviate, which was taken after 1712. Two files from 1483 report on the right of residence and domicile for Jews and on Jews as creditors of the people of Steckborn. A file from 1489 reports on freedoms that Jews in Diessenhofen received from the Confederation for three years. In the same year, the right of Jews to lend money in Diessenhofen was restricted. Several files between 1489 and 1493 include details on the expulsion of Jews from the landgraviate which was demanded and the Jewish resistance against this measure.
From 1513 there is a file which reports on a discussion about which court would have jurisdiction over Jews. The ecclesiastical court of Konstanz was suggested, among others. From 1622 there is a document which reports on how Jews were asked to leave the county of Baden. Similar documents can be found from the years 1651 to 1653, and from 1654 there is a document which reports on the renewal of the state order (also with regard to Jews).
