- Scope and content:
- The municipal records collection dates from the 13th to the 18th century. This collection was again divided into various other sub-divisions. In the series of church records there are five documents of interest. One document from 1386 deals with the guarantee of protection for five years by the city of Bern to Slemmen Moyses and his wife of Colmar and to Joseph Richenwiler. The other document is from King Wenceslaus in 1388. He postponed the date of a court hearing between the City of Basel and Johann von Krenkingen concerning the estate of the Jew Moyses. Two other documents again deal with a dispute between King Wenceslaus and the City of Basel over the Basel Jews and their outstanding payments. In 1390 Wenceslaus declared himself to be completely reconciled with the city after 4,500 florins had been paid to him. - Archival history:
- The collections of this archive came into the possession of the State Archive at different times.
- Administrative/biographical history:
- The oldest document in the State Archive, a monastery charter, dates back to 1098. The city archive was destroyed in the Basel earthquake of 1356. Since then, administrative activities have been closely preserved in most areas. The online archive catalogue offers numerous research options. Selected photographic and film documents as well as some 420,000 pages of written documents can be viewed online via the archive catalogue.
