The collection contains documents from the period before the French conquest of the canton in 1798. These are both secular and ecclesiastical documents. The collection contains 22 items of interest to the Jewish life of the canton. These are primarily official documents such as complaints by the Jews of Endingen and Lengnau against the so-called Dorfgeld (village money) (1726-1730), marriage contracts of the Endingen and Lengnau Jews from 1803 or the departure of Jews from the region between 1666 and 1719. Furthermore, the Old Archive contains a document concerning the Jew Bollag, who wanted to illegally export a cow from Endingen in 1794. The same man apparently bought a cow from the French in 1796, which was not that unusual at the time. Most of the available documents are complaints to the authorities about alleged or actual misconduct by Jews. In 1791, for example, the Obervogteiamt Rötteln complained about the passage of some Jews in Rümikon to the detriment of customs at Kaiserstuhl.
The collection also includes a document about the Jew Hirsch Wyl (Weil) who traded horses in Mellingen in 1759, and one concerning the dispute between the Jew Raphael Picard and the Endingen monastery in 1747-1748. In addition, the holdings include a record concerning the debts of the Klingnau Provostry to the Jews Bolayg (Bollag) (1576) and Marum Gugenheim (Guggenheim) (1692/1693). Furthermore, the inventory contains a complaint by the Jew Raphael Kaula of Hechingen against the town of Rheinfelden regarding the body toll (and against the town of Laufenburg) from 1787 to 1789 as well as a document recording the Jewish customs duty and escort for Nathan Ulmo (Ulman) from Kenzingen etc. and his sons and for Jacob Daniel from Bräunlingen (letter of consignment) and the unauthorised deportation of Jews by the town of Rheinfelden from 1650 to 1674.
In addition, the collection includes a file entitled Judenakten (records concerning Jews) that covers the period from 1620 to 1796.

- Administrative/biographical history:
- After the foundation of the Canton of Aargau in 1803, the Registrar of the State Chancellery in Aarau was responsible for organising and archiving the files produced by the new legislative and executive authorities. In the early years, these were housed in one of the lower rooms of the old town hall, which had been made available to the cantonal government by the Helvetic authorities. In the 1820s the archive moved to the new government building in the front suburb. In 1959, the State Archive and the Cantonal Library moved into a new building designed especially for them. The organisational separation of the two institutions in 1967 was also spatially completed in 1998 when the State Archive moved to the new Buchenhof administration building. The move to the new building brought about a marked improvement in internal operational processes. The archive users have a modern and purpose-oriented working environment in the Buchenhof.
