It comprises documents collected by Ingeborg Brüll including photos (1), personal documents (2), records about the furniture factory of her grandfather Michael Brüll (3), newspaper articles concerning Jewish life and the history of the Nazi regime in Innsbruck (4), correspondence (5), newspaper articles about the department store “Bauer & Schwarz” (6), newspaper articles about bomb attacks on Innsbruck (7), information about her cousin Ilse Brüll (8), some more copies of newspapers from 1970 to 2004 (9) and an interview with Inge Brüll about her life and experiences during the Nazi period (10).
1. Ingeborg Brüll’s photo collection shows different scenes of her life. There are pictures of her childhood, family, friends and classmates. Moreover, there are pictures of her wedding and her time in the monastery as well as a personal photo album which includes pictures of her and her family (her parents Antonia Wasserer and Josef Brüll and her cousin Ilse Brüll) on winter and summer holidays and on excursions to different places.
2. The personal documents series includes her passport of 1998, victim identification card of 1953, her birth and baptism certificates, her certificate of nationality (1926), a diploma as qualified nurse, school certificates and certificates of her time in the monastery in Eindhoven (Netherlands). Additionally, the collection includes an employment contract as a nurse in the state hospital of Innsbruck as well as compensation applications because of persecution. There is also a document from 1999 which shows her nomination as a honorary member of the Tyrolean Committee because of her Jewish-Christian cooperation work.
3. The material relating to her grandfather Michael Brüll (1856-1919; a furniture retailer, manufacturer and provost of the Chewra Kadischa) includes an advertising catalogue with pictures of furniture and the personnel of the furniture factory.
4. The fourth part of this collection comprises newspaper articles about Jewish life and historical events, for example details about the Nazi pogrom of 1938 in Innsbruck as well as about Jewish identity and contemporary discussions about issues concerning Jews.
5. Ingeborg Brüll’s personal papers include correspondence and postcards between Ingeborg Brüll, her family, friends and acquaintances. These documents show her efforts concerning the cooperation between Jews and Catholics.
6. The next part of the collection comprises newspaper articles about the history of the department store “Bauer & Schwarz” in Innsbruck. It was the biggest department store in Innsbruck and one of the victims of the antisemitic attacks in the early 20th century, especially of the pogroms in Innsbruck in 1938. Later this store was “Aryanised” by the Nazis.
7. Ingeborg Brüll also collected newspaper articles about the bomb attacks on Innsbruck in World War II. Approximately 462 people died during the 21 attacks on 15 December 1943 and more than half of the buildings in Innsbruck were destroyed or damaged.
8. This part of the collection is about her cousin Ilse Brüll, a victim of the Nazi regime. It includes personal details (birthdate and place, citizenship, religion, last address) as well as personal documents, such as her school card and annual train ticket. It also contains copies of letters in which she wrote about occurrences and her experiences in the concentration camp Westerbork/Hoghaalen. Those were her last letters before she died in Auschwitz-Birkenau in 1942, when she was 17 years old. At the entrance of the main school in Wilten/Innsbruck there is a memorial plaque to remember her and the fate of other Jews who died during the Nazi period. This collection contains newspaper articles about this memorial. More information about Ilse Brüll can be found at http://www.hohenemsgenealogie.at/en/genealogy/getperson.php?personID=I2082&tree=Hohenems
9. The articles from newspapers and religious and historical magazines (from 1938 and from 1970 to 2004) generally deal with Jewish and Christian topics and also include information about the cooperation and connection between the Jewish and Christian religions. Source newspapers and magazines include: “Memo. Ökumenischer Manuskriptdienst für religiöse Sendungen im ORF”, “Monatsjournal Tirol”, “Entschluss. Spiritualität, Praxis, Gemeinde”, “Kirche. Wochenzeitung für das Bistum Innsbruck”, “David. Jüdische Kulturzeitschrift“, “Schalom. Zeitschrift der österreichisch-israelischen Gesellschaft”.
10. The interview with Ingeborg Brüll was conducted on 20 August 2008 by Josefine Justic and Gertraud Wilfling. The interview is transcribed and publicly accessible in the online database “Augias” in the City Archive of Innsbruck.
