Many of these texts were written by Jews who lived in Hohenems or had connections to the Jewish community of Hohenems. There are some books written by Rabbi Aron Tänzer about the history of Jews in different parts of Europe, such as “Die Geschichte der Juden in Hohenems” (The History of the Jews in Hohenems). Regina Ullmann on the other hand wrote mainly novels, such as “Der ehrliche Dieb und andere Geschichten” (The Honest Thief and Other Stories), while Richard Hohenemser wrote about Arthur Schopenhauer. The collection also includes the book “Shir Zion” written by Salomon Sulzer. Books written by family members of Hohenemser families, such as Arnold and Werner Burgauer or Clotilde Brettauer (novels), Ernst Hohenemser (travel reportage) or Louis Reichenbach and Paul Tänzer (history) are also to be found.
The collection also contains school books of Max and Ludwig Brettauer, account books of Jakob Josef Guggenheim from the late 19th to early 20th century and a collection of sermons edited by Rabbi Abraham Kohn from the first half of the 19th century.
The collection includes a great number of religious books or editions of prayers, written by Jewish theologians or cantors such as Salomon Sulzer. Most of these books were written during the 19th or early 20th century. The collection also includes various books about secular Judaism. Most of these books are about ethics, philosophy or political and musical history. The most famous book is perhaps “Der Judenstaat” (The Jewish State) by Theodor Herzl.
The collection also holds textbooks (mainly for learning Hebrew), doctoral and habilitation theses of members of the Jewish community such as Aron Tänzer, Hans Elkan and Louis Bollag.
Furthermore, it contains instances of antisemitic literature written in the first half of the 20th century.
The collection also includes some works of world literature written by famous writers such as Friedrich Schiller, Ernest Hemingway or Stefan Zweig and programmes, journals and reports written by institutions such as the German and Austrian Alpine Club or various Jewish organisations and institutions.
Signatures: the collection is numbered from B 1 to B 519.
