The collection “Gericht und Landgericht Dornbirn” (court and district court of Dornbirn) holds a variety of files concerning the Jewish community of Hohenems and Jewish life in general. Most of the files are connected to legal proceedings of various kinds. One file (Misc. 1824/51), for example, contains correspondence between the Jewish community of Hohenems and the district court about apparently unpaid wages of Rabbi Samuel Ullmann. Another file (Misc. 1830/2) holds a correspondence between the Jewish community and the district court as well as a small number of letters about a Rabbi called Angelus Kafka, who was in contention for the rabbinate in Hohenems. There is another file (Misc. 1845/16) about the appointment of a rabbi, namely Abraham Kohn, who was rabbi in Lemberg (Lviv) before 1845.
The fascicle “Baupolizei 1828/44” includes a file about a strife between the Jewish community and the authorities about the construction and renovation of the mikveh of Hohenems. The file includes two lists of the estimated costs and a documentation of the building process of the district engineer Felix Ducati. The file “Judensachen 1807 to 1817” contains various correspondences, mainly from the Bavarian era, and concerns, like most of the other files in this collection, mainly the religious aspects of the community (i.e. the appointments of several rabbis and the expenditure of the community). Amongst these documents applications for passports can be found (Judensachen 1815). The businessman Ephraim Ullmann, for example, applied for one in 1815.
The collection also holds manuscripts. Some are about marriages, like that between Nathan Levi and Regina Elias in 1813 (Hds. und Cod. nr. 6/fol. 346 to 348). Other manuscripts (Hds. und Cod. nr. 8/fol. 125 and 129 and 9/fol. 201) contain lists of the estates or properties of Bernhard Moos, Hermann Wolf, Judith Daniel, Lazar Joseph Levi, Benedikt Guggenheim, Moses Lazar Levi, Simon Lazar Levi, Joseph Hirsch Levi, Daniel Lazar Levi and Ephraim Ullmann.

- Archival history:
- It is unclear when the collection was acquired, but it must have been between 1946 and 1970.
- Administrative/biographical history:
- The Landgerichte (district courts) were introduced by the Bavarian rulers in 1806/1807 and were an institution that had administrative and jurisdictional duties. The Landgerichte (district courts) were in place until 1850, when their duties were split up and they were replaced by the Bezirkshaupmannschaften (district administrations) and the Bezirksgerichte (district courts) respectively.
