- Scope and content:
- The collection includes building permits that were found in records of the period of the Ionian State (1815-1864). The permits are for buildings in the town of Corfu, its close surroundings, and two villages. They cover the entire period of the Ionian State. The items include a print of the building to be granted the permit, as well as a memo with information about the building and its owner. In some permits adjacent buildings are referred to. Permits have been catalogued in detail and a digital database has been created in which researchers can search for them based on date, name of owner, etc. In addition, an extensive thematic index has been created, which includes the temples mentioned in the permits, among them the Italian Syanagogue, and neighbourhoods, among them the Jewish quarter.
- Archival history:
- The Archive of Building Permits of the Ionian State was created after various building permits were collected from archives of the period of the Ionian State, under the General State Archives - Archives of the Prefecture of Corfu. At the beginning of the thematic catalogue there is a list with reference to the file from which each permit has been drawn.
- Administrative/biographical history:
- The Ionian State, or as it is formally known, the United States of the Ionian Islands, is an independent state entity established in 1815 that is a protectorate of the United Kingdom. It came to an end in 1864 when the Ionian Islands were united with the Greek State. The island of Corfu was part of the Ionian State and the official language of the administration was mainly Greek, although on some occasions Italian and English were also used.
